Hi there. This is a royal mess and I'd appreciate any help. My daughter has a Mac SE, 8 megs of ram, with the FDHD superdrive. It has a chopped down version of System 7 in it. Recently, she turned it on and got a flashing disk icon with a question mark in the center. I've got a friend who is going to send me another hard drive for it, already loaded, so whatever is wrong, I'm hoping that will fix it. My problem is this. This hard drive has MS Excel, Word, Professional Write, After Dark, Claris... bunch of stuff that, of course, I dont have backed up and would probably be impossible to replace. We bought this machine off Ebay and it didnt come with any disks. Since it wont start without a start up disk, is there any way I can save this stuff? I do have a start up disk but unfortunately, something is wrong with it where its missing disk tools. It DID have disk tools on it and when I used it, it did say there were errors on the drive that it couldnt repair. Before running disk tools, the drive was missing from the desktop. After running it, it reappeared but it was renamed to .00 SCSI Drive. I could at least get into it though and poke around, but still there was no way to back it up. Taking out the start up disk, it would ask for it back. No putting in another floppy to back stuff up. Now, without disk tools, I cant even get to the drive anymore. I dont know where it went. Its typical tho. Things are gone, and then reappearing. There is no system folder on the drive unless you go to Find and find it. Then it appears but it will vanish again right before your eyes. Really strange. Is this hard drive shot? Is there a way I can slave it to the new drive when it comes just to move her stuff? I know this is an older machine but its our first experience with a Mac and we love it. lol Yes, I do intend to eventually buy a newer Mac once I'm financially set to do it, so please, no responses about buying an imac! ;-) The only other computer in the house is a pentium Gateway. The two just do not get along. lol I know of sites where I can download disk tools but how to get it on a disk where the Mac doesnt spit it back out at me is beyond me. Any suggestions at all? Thanks!
