Hello,
I'm mostly a PC guy, though I did take a year of classes at Lane Community College (LCC), Oregon in Music Technology. LCC uses Macs and use music software Digital Performer (version 4.62).I very much loved that software, though it is specific for Mac only. So I'm strongly considering buying a Mac just, so I can use that software to make music (gulp). I understand that I would have to also purchase an MOTU for a digital audio interface which is proprietary (sp) to Mac and the software.
LCC is using:
OSX10.3.9
And their website lists more details about their workstations:

[I dont want to buy a whole workstation [mixing board, amps, other hardware]. Just the Mac and the MOTU].So Im wondering what kind of computer I'd need to get. Not looking to get something brand new, necessarily. But I'd like to at least have the computer power that LCCs desktops have (which is noted on the site).
I'm not familiar with other digital music programs, though I did buy a M-Audio Firewire 410 digital interface which came with LIVE software, which is inferior to Digital Performer. I don't use it.
I'm estimating my price range to be up to $1000 or so for the Mac. No laptop. Please let me know your thoughts in detail...? Thanks, so much. (sorry this is so long, but I wanted to put everything out there).
Jim
