Mac printing straight to IP address

I have a MAC PowerPC laptop with an ethernet adapter on it that needs to print straight to an IP address. Is this possible? The way it's setup now is there are four users, two with PC's two with Macs all connected through a hub straight to the printer, no file sharing is needed just printer sharing. The PC's can print fine straight to the printer's IP address. Can the same thing be done with the Macs, and if so HOW?

You have to have the proper driver for the printer loaded in your mac. The install disk that came with the printer should work just fine for that. Otherwise get the latest driver from the manufacturers website and drop it ONTO your system FOLDER where it should automatically put into the extensions where it belongs. Reboot. Then select the printer in the 'chooser' where it now should show up if you are connected to said network where printer resides (the printer should be ON, BTW). You are not literally sending to an IP address, you are sending to a printing device AT such an address, You need not really KNOW the address (at least not on an all MAC network). Print as normal through the 'page setup' & 'print' menus in whatever app you are using to print from.

Actually, you can print to an IP address, you'll be using LPR to print. You do need the Apple Desktop Printer Utility to do this (I'm assuming you are using OS 9.x). You can find this in your Utilities folder on your hard drive. Double-click on the icon and you will get a dialog. At the top you'll see "With" and a pull down menu next to it. Make sure LaserWriter 8 is selected. Below that it says: "Create Desktop... " select "Printer LPR" and click OK. Now you have another dialog box. The upper area will allow you to select your PPD (you can use Generic, but you won't get the options of the printer). The lower section (click on Change button) allows you to add your IP address and queue (if needed). Click create and you should be ready to go!

I have a similar problem. I have a Mac PowerPC with an OS 8.1. My problem is that I want to print to a printer (HP 4000) connected to a Linux box. What to do? Thanks.
