Last year, when Apple released their Mac OS 8.6, I downloaded it and updated my Mac OS 8.5.1. My computer was fine, it basically never froze, but when I installed Mac OS 8.6 it began to freeze like crazy. I then atempted to find the problem to soon realize it was futile and I then resorted to calling up Apple and having to get their help to soon find out that that was no better. I then uninstalled 8.6 and put back 8.5.1 or 8.5 and went on with my life. Recently I haven't been able to go on the internet because I have no money to pay for internet access, neither do I have any motivation to pay, so I found out that Altavista was giving out free internet access, so then I got all pumped up to find out it didn't work with 8.5 and 8.5.1. I then decided after some long and careful thinking to re-install 8.6 and hope it wouldn't do what it did a year previous to that day. Not to my amazement did it occur again and I tried everything I could to fix it and I then resorted to calling Apple again and then they actually were able to help me and they told me that I should either re-install 8.5 with the option of Clean Install and then install 8.6 or just buy an 8.6 where I could find one and then intall the 8.6 system instead of the update. I do not currently have my Mac OS 8.5 Install CD just the Restore, and I would really appreciate some help on this topic. What should I do? Please help!

BTDT...Been there, done that. Seems like everybody has this problem. It's known in mac circles as the "infamous stall". You can read a discussion and solution at Macfixit . It involves disabling the networking extension. After that everything should work fine. It did for me. However 8.6 also is a bit slower rendering windows on the screen.I have an iMac Rev A with 192 Megs of RAM and really prefer 8.5.1 but seems as though most programs require 8.6 now. Too bad. Hope this helps you.
