Mac Mail viewer window gone

Suddenly after months of success I went to open up my mac mail program and was unable to open new viewer window. I can open the program, see the menu bar, even click on all the tools etc, but no view window. Yes, restarted, relaunched, tried open viewer window from menu, etc. I know this happened once before but I do not remember how to make it work.
