Comment: I have an old MAC I got from a school I would like to experiment with It has MAC OS 8.1 and I get a "Not enough access rights" error. I have dial-up so Is there anything I can do at home to get admin rights or do I have to get something at a WiFi Hotspot?

Reply: (edit)"Not enough access rights" to do what? Log on? Use a particular program? change settings? Access files? You're going to have to clarify your post by providing more info on exactly what you're trying to do before anybody can help.

Reply: (edit)Sounds like the machine could possibly have At Ease loaded on it. Is there an At Ease control panel? If there is you need to change the settings in there. Problem is it is more than likely password protected and you'll need the password. If you don't have that but have the install discs for the computer boot from them then find the At Ease extension and AT Ease control panel and throw them away and reboot.

Reply: (edit)Did you have an At Ease Control Panel? Knowing whether or not program is installed will tell us where to go next.

Reply: (edit)I have had quite a lot of experience with old Macs from schools that have At Ease installed. The only way to get at it without the password is to boot from another source, eg CD, or external hard drive. Sometimes At Ease won't let you do that, in which case you need to unplug the internal hard drive, boot from another source, and then plug in the internal hard drive, once booted. The utility, Drive Setup is then needed to mount the internal hard drive. Once you can get at it, destroy everything with the name At Ease. It is truly horrible software.

Reply: (edit)does holding the shift key down on bootup disable extensions? try that.. .and once you get to the desktop, disable the 'multiple users' preference. this should disable at ease.
