Ok, here's the deal, I have an old mac classic, I love nastalgia, but, whenever I shut off the computer then let's say anywhere from 1 min. to 1 hour tuirn it back on it wont do anything just sit there with these wide lines going across the screen, so I have to shut it off and unplug it for about 4 hrs. or more, then I can plug it back in and restart, at first I was told this was a problem with my ram, and whenever I started up when I had the chips in and hit the debug button, I got the sad mac, with what I was told was a memory error, so I tooki out to chips and the computer was a little bit better, but this problem keeps going? What up with it, is this a problem with the internal soldered memory or what? Thanks in advance for the help.

I've got a Mac Classic which had exactly the same symptoms as you describe. The problem got steadily worse until the computer wouldn't start up at all - just those wide lines on screen that you mention.

I first thought it might be a problem with the analogue board but I happened to notice a logic board for sale on eBay which cost next to nothing. After I replaced the logic board everything was fine and the Classic still works well.

I think the problem could be caused by a number of things and replacement of individual components would need good soldering/de-soldering skills. Links to service manuals can be found here:

This may help you to pinpoint the problem although often the recommended action is to replace whole boards rather than individual components.

well, it appears to be a 'classic' prob with those things (heh)..mine gives me a checkerboard pattern for about the first four hours, then it starts up fine..apparently cleaning the ram chip contacts and getting the dust out helps..that is, if you have the right screwdriver to get them open, which i dont have...i just leave it on all the time as i store phone numbers in it (longest it's been on at one time two months straight..no prob!)
