hi,
The problem I have is that AOL on a mac will not connect through a Windows 2000 PC ICS connection to a DirecPC satellite.
I have a satellite connection hooked up to a Windows 2000 pc. I've got pcs and macs going through the pc's ICS via some LinkSys routers. The server pc and all other networked pcs can run and sign on to AOL without problems. But I can't get any mac to connect with AOL - I always get a TCP error.
Also, I've found that those macs can't log into AOL's website mail server either, though I think at one point in the past that may have worked. The macs can browse with IE without any problems. I've tried OS 9 and OS 10.2 on the macs but no luck. I have to configure the proxy settings on AOL and I think the basic setup is good, because AOL seems to start connecting and goes through a few steps, but then gives a TCP error right before completing the sign on.
If anyone has any ideas on the source of this problem, I'd be very grateful as I've struggled with this a long time. AOL of course refuses to discuss this issue, but this is for my parents and I'd like to keep them connected with what they are used to. I know a router system would work, but this setup is out in the boonies and currently satellite USB modem through ICS is my only option.
thanks,
Michel

AOL does work through TCP/IP, as that's how I connect when I feel like using AOL. The Mac machines don't happen to have a firewall set up, do they?
If you go into AOL v.X's expert TCP/IP setup, you can specify what connection script (cable, TCP, DSL, et cetera) you want to use, and a firewire server and port, if necessary. See if that helps.

You mean they finally got rid of the silly proprietary AOL protocol with the OS X version?
My guess is still that there's something funny with the satellite connection. I'd be curious to know if AOL works on the Windoze box, because if it doesn't work there, I see *no* reason to expect it'll work via ICS.

hi,
the windows machines do work through ICS.
I am currently using the firewall port on AOL's settings for the macs.
If there is a firewall setup on the macs, I'm not familiar with it. But I have identical problems with OS 9 and OS X so I suspect it's not settings on the macs specifically.
I suppose it could be settings on the linksys router - though I'm not sure why the macs might be different than the pcs. I guess if anyone has ever had mac aol working through pc ICS under any circumstances, that would help me narrow this down. I've seen other forums mention a similar problem but no clear solution or clear indication that it can never work. So I continue to hope...
thx,
Michel

hi,
to clarify - I have aol installed on the networked PCs and it works through the ICS without problems.
thx,

hi,
I have it set up to use TCP. I'm not sure what the story is with a proprietary aol protocol or what that means ... but that probably is related to the troubles.

AOL on the Classic Mac OS couldn't work over a standard TCP connection. That's why you have the TCPack for AOL extension - one of the Comm Toolbox extensions - in the Extensions folder on every Mac OS from about 7.5 to 9.2.2.
Apparently the programmers finally decided to make it work properly.
My guess is the problem lies either with ICS itself (in which case you should try hanging a Windoze box off the ICS box and see if AOL works then) or with AOL not working through ICS, period.
If the Windoze box works hanging off the ICS box, then your problem is with the TCP config on the Macs, most likely.
