Answered an ad for a used HD to upgrade my wife’s Performa 450 (don’t laugh, it works fine for lower elementary). For $10 more ($30 total) I got a complete Power Mac 7100/66 so I’m replacing her whole set up.
The “new” Mac had system 7.6.1 and Office 98 installed. The MS Office programs worked fine but were registered to The University of xxxx (from which the hardware had been purchased). I installed a legit copy of Office 98 that I own so that “illegal software copy” isn’t advertised every time Word/Excel/PPT launches.
I followed the “Remove Office 98” path on the install CD and then re-installed Office 98 using Easy Install. The installation never prompted me for registration details. When Word/Excel/PPT launched, they still displayed “Licensed to University of xxxx”. Tried a second time by just copying the “Office 98” folder from the install disk to the hard drive. Also hard-replaced the “Office 98” file itself.
All attempts have the same results: “This product is licensed to the University of xxxx” with the original license ID, not the ID from my install CD. Obviously a registry file wasn’t deleted and/or updated but I can’t find it.
What am I missing?? Do I have to reinstall the system from my disks? Can I edit a registry file?
Help!
