Weird... Panasonic (Matsushxta, replace the x with i to get the real name, but the censoring on the forum catches it :() was Apple's OEM, so it probably *is* an Apple drive unless you've replaced it.

What if you do a reinstall of *only* the CD-ROM stuff from your system CD?

have tried all of that...just means i have no
back up disks for emergency use...only
my floppy drive works...which according to
all posts wont be big enough for 8.6 boot
up...so i cant put my cd back in as it does
not work....some times i can get my old
7.5 cds to work but it takes time and
patience....great mac site..very much
appreciated..bob

it only seems to work some of the time
and then it s mainly audio cds...wont read
any games...it starts to read these and
then stops....no messages or nothing...so
i am presuming my cd rom is "dead, jim
dead" if i put a data disk in...it just sits
there no re action at all....bob

Yep, sounds like it might be dying.

You can get a new (used) one on eBay for about $10-25 including shipping. That's what I'd do.

or try cleanning the unit in quiestion could be having problems reading higher density disks (700mb instead of 650) or weak sector burn problems try cleaning it before you repolace have revived dead cd burners even this way (by a cdrom cleaning kit and a can of air (i tend to blow out the device as well))
