Heya
I have a Mac LC 580 which has been upgraded to 50MB RAM if I recall correctly; I upgraded the RAM and it's been a while since I double checked how much is in it. 500MB hard drive.
I've bought an OS 8 install CD because I've been strongly advised to get away from System 7 (I believe 7.5.something is on it now) and the price was right ($5 plus $5 shipping). It's in the mail now.
Basically, I'd like to know the complete process for installing OS 8 on this computer. Also, while I do not want any remnants of the old OS and files left behind, I would like to know if it's possible to transfer over a couple applications, notably MS Office. My only medium for storing things off of the computer during the operation is floppy disks.
Please keep in mind I'm not a Mac expert; some terms will likely be completely foreign to me. If an equivalent term in the Windows world exists, please mention it to help understanding.
Thanks
Kishkizzle

your OS 8 disc will overwrite the old version of the system and keep your apps, files and even settings, mostly.
You will see quite a few advantages of OS 8 over 7.5, some including speedier operation and the new look.
enjoy.

Ah thank you, however that's a problem.
I was given the Mac by my old high school, then the hard drive died, and I was able to buy the 500mb one with OS, software already on it, as is, nice and cheap. It was an easy solution until I realized it has stuff on it that I don't want (another reason for OS reinstall).
Not on or near the Mac currently but off the top of my head, an email shortcut on the desktop cannot be removed or modified in any way without the password, and not I or even the place I bought the drive know it (it was removed from a system heading for the trash, I believe, and then untouched for months).
Is it possible to 'selectively' keep things?

ah i see so you're looking to initialise the disk but 'selectively' keep things, hmm.
the answer is not really.
myself i have an old performa 350 also known as the LC III I believe. a lot of older programs on it that are just self contained in their own folders. you could try copying some of those, and things you wish to keep, onto other disk?

Ah, thanks.
I determined it's something called keychain or similar. I just want to remove it, I have no interest in viewing the password protected content, I just want it gone. Any ideas?

OS 8 CD arrived!
Alright, well, I guess we could call this "solved".
I pulled out an old SCSI IBM hard drive I have, put it in the CD bay of the system, patched the HD SC setup program to support other drives, initialized it, copied my programs and stuff onto it, then put back in CD drive and booted to CD.
Installation is about 20 mins in right now and I selected "clean install". Reason being I actually found the setup files for MS office on the hard drive and copied them to my other drive.
Obviously things can still go wrong at this point but I think I've got a good grasp on it. Thanks for the responses.

Keychain, lol. Your talking old stuff.
Mac OS 8 on a 68040 equipped machine will only slow it down and use up more of your ram. Some of the LC580/Quadra/performa 630-640 boards had only 1 ram slot, expansion back in the day was not possible past 36mb's(4 on board) and 68 on other boards.
You should get a hold of a System 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 CD and install that. It will use far less ram and be considerably faster than OS 8.0 or 8.1(max for 68K machines)
Anything you can run in 8.1 you can run in os 7.x except faster, just remember that.
Your best bet would just be to start off the cd, run Disk(or drive, or HD) setup and initialize the HD. Don't worry about whats on it if it isnt even yours.
After you have installed the OS, most things can be downloaded from pure-mac.com I think 8 came with an early version of IE, or netscape, but I can't remember.
Anyhow, stick with 7.53, or 7.5.5 (7.6.x is extremely buggy)
Get to pure-mac.com and download any 68k software you want. Games, apps, utilities, etc.Core 2 Duo 1.86

Nvidia 8500GT 500/1000

To re-enforce what I was saying about 7.5.x, here is a webpage that advises you on what OS you should run:

good luck

Thanks for your info, however, as limited as my experience with the older OS's is, I can say this:
8.0, what I am using now, is FLYING in every way at least twice as fast as the previous 7.5.1 was. Furthermore, I hear 8.0 has better compatibility for ethernet/TCPIP networking out of the box, and experience is proving this to be true now also. Using iCab I can visit modern websites with nowhere near the number of errors that netscape 3 was giving lol.
Bookmarking that site, however, it could be quite useful.
BTW, used the LC580 to get my dead 475 living again. The HDD died, and I had an IBM SCSI drive available, so I put it in the 580, patched hd sc setup, initialized, then copied all of 580's HD onto the IBM drive, and presto, the 475 lives on (faster than 7.something ran also, before the drive died).
Now all I need is a second LC PDS ethernet card...

I said OS 8 would be faster didn't I :)

lol indeed you did, thank you.
Not to discredit Outlander, but the reality simply is they both are running way quicker than they did with their varying versions of system 7. Bit of a slower startup but quicker operation once booted.

I found the same when I upgraded my Performa 450 from System 7.1 to System 7.5.3. It takes longer to start, but once it's going, it's a hair faster than 7.1.
