Comment: I just picked up a Mac Powerbook Laptop... System software 7.0.1.. What is it capable of doing if anything? How can I d/l something for Macintosh.. with my PC, and load it into the mac.. is that possible? Also, is it possible for this to get online? It has a modem, and appears to be able to send faxes, but I would like to know if it can do more... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Jenni

Reply: (edit)Jenni, Can my car go 165 miles an hour? It's a Chevy, and I use 89 octane gas. Well...? Thw point I make is that you have all this info about your mac (What model, How much Ram, How big Hard drive, How fast MODEM? Etc, Etc,) and you have a problem and we can't READ YOUR MIND. You are leaving out the pertinent info because you are LAZY and don't want to TYPE it IN here. Please try again.

Reply: (edit)OK, I left out how much ram.. there is 4,096k free. That was all I wrote down. As for the modem speed, I dont know, I came across a list of maybe 10 or more, so Im not sure which modem is in there. Like I said, I know nothing about Mac, and wouldnt know where to look for this info.

Reply: (edit)Obviously hizzoner is a little rude. I think one of your first steps is to read a bunch of older posts on this board. That's how I learned a lot of information. As far as software goes, just be sure it is system 7 compatable, many programs need OS 8 or newer. After all that, gather as much onfo you know about the computer, and ask again. Also, what software is already on it? Maybe it will serve the purpose. You don't need the newest, fastest thing to accomplish many tasks. Most people use their $3000 computers as big typewriters, anyways. By the way, what do you want to use this thing for, anyways????

Reply: (edit)Thank you, Well, I picked it up at a garage sale for $25, and being one that cant pass up a deal like that, I couldnt not get it. Even though I already have a PC. I just wanted to know if it was internet compatable if you want to say that. It has Norton utilities in it, I ran it yesterday this is the info I got from it: Its an HFS disk 40,950,784 total disk space 18,955,264 bytes used 641,024 total bytes used in system area 21,354,496 bytes available on disk 20,854k free and then it listed all the version of the different programs. mostly 7.0.1 The main question that I was wanting the answer to was how can I (if I can) download something from my PC and put it on the mac? Thank you

Reply: (edit)Jenni- I don't know a lot about Macs either but I do know that, unless you have some special software on your Mac, you'll need to buy Mac software. (There's a program called SoftWindows that runs Win progs on a PowerMac but I don't know if they made PowerMac laptops). Hope this helps answer your question.

Reply: (edit)Jenni, It sounds like you don't have alot of free space left. I wouldn't really recomend downloading anything major since you only have 20MB free. My suggestion would be to look around your hard disk for programs and figure out what you have first before you start downloading stuff. Just dont delete anything in your system folder. It is possible to download stuff from your PC and transfer it your mac. It doesn't work the other way around though. As far as the internet goes. You need at least OS 7.5.3 which is available free from www.apple.com, you will also need something like FreePPP or Open Transport (apple) to dail your ISP. You will also need some ISP then. Almost all ISP can support macintosh, but some require software that will not install on your computer (Juno). if you have MSN, you can use your same username and password and copy the phone number and input that into open transport and you should connect. Or aol has a mac friendly software, along with prodigy. The nice thing about AOL adn Prodigy is that they come with a built in browser; otherwise you will need to download one. And it would probably be rather hard to find one that would run on your computer. As far as a modem goes 14.4 will get you connected, hardly, 28.8 is decent but slow. 33.6 is the slowest I would go, but you probably have a 14.4 if your lucky, otherwise its 9600 or a 19.2 both of which are rediculosly slow. So you probably could get on the internet, but if you have a 386 or faster PC, you

Reply: (edit)I'm guessing since you didn't include a model number that you have the original powerbook and that you have about 8mb of ram which is enough to run netscape 3.0. You should upgrade to 7.5 and then upgrade to 7.5.3 (you can not upgrade to 7.5.3 directly, you have to install 7.5 first). Your machine should support it, if you have an internet connection check apples site to make sure. Follow the previous post's instructions on modem speed. You can get on the internet, but I would suggest turning off images in Netscape due to the older powerbooks less than stellar display. It's good for email though. And as for getting pc stuff, you can transfer stuff from the pc by using a pc formatted floppy but you need to have 7.5 in order to read pc disks on a mac. Also, you will need to make sure you have mac programs capable of reading the pc files. Visit your mac software manufacturers site to find out what programs can read and manipulate pc files.
