    Key Highlights

    • American Express has entered an agreement to purchase Hyper, an artificial intelligence-driven expense management platform supported by Sam Altman.
    • The startup’s AI technology handles automated expense sorting, report generation, compliance verification, and deadline notifications.
    • A collaboration between AmEx and Hyper began in 2024 with the introduction of the Hypercard Rewards American Express card.
    • Transaction completion is anticipated during the second quarter of 2026; specific financial details remain undisclosed.
    • A comprehensive AI-driven expense management solution from AmEx will debut later this year.

American Express has announced its intention to acquire Hyper, an artificial intelligence expense management platform established in 2022 with support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This acquisition represents AmEx’s ongoing commitment to integrating advanced automation across its commercial offerings.

We’re excited to share that we have entered into an agreement to acquire Hyper, an agentic expense management company, adding to Amex’s AI expertise and capabilities across our commercial services business.

Hyper develops AI-powered agents designed to streamline expense management tasks — organizing expenditures, generating reports, validating entries against budgets and internal guidelines, and sending reminders to staff about approaching deadlines.

The companies share an existing collaborative history. During 2024, they joined forces to introduce the Hypercard Rewards American Express card, featuring integrated AI expense capabilities through AmEx’s Agile Partner Platform.

This purchase represents an evolution of their existing relationship, bringing Hyper’s technological capabilities directly under AmEx’s operational umbrella.

Specific financial terms remain confidential. The acquisition is scheduled to finalize during the second quarter of 2026, pending customary closing requirements.

    Commercial Services Expansion

AmEx has been steadily expanding its commercial division. The previous month saw the introduction of a new commercial credit card featuring cashback incentives and exclusive benefits, carrying a $295 yearly membership fee.

Additional card products are planned for release later in the current year.

During last month’s shareholder communication, AmEx CEO Stephen Squeri characterized artificial intelligence as driving a “structural shift” in business operations. The Hyper acquisition aligns directly with this strategic vision.

Raymond Joabar, Group President of Global Commercial Services at AmEx, stated: “Our customers want smarter, more efficient ways to manage expenses so they can focus on what’s next for their business.”

Marc Baghadjian, CEO and Co-Founder of Hyper, added: “We’re excited to join the team at American Express and work together to help businesses reduce friction in the expense process through AI technology.”

    Hyper’s Core Capabilities

Hyper launched in 2022 with a mission to transform manual expense procedures into automated systems. The platform’s AI agents perform functions beyond simple receipt organization — they verify submissions against corporate policies and identify potential irregularities.

This automated compliance functionality holds significant value for organizations processing substantial volumes of employee expenditures.

AmEx has announced intentions to unveil a comprehensive AI-powered expense management platform later this year, featuring advanced artificial intelligence functionalities. Hyper’s technology will contribute to this upcoming release.

AXP stock experienced modest movement after the announcement, declining approximately 0.69% during the trading session.
