Model/Manufacturer: mac G3
Comment:
Hi, i was wondering if someone could help me out with this. I recently found a mac sitting outside by my dumster the other day...a G3 model it seems. And since im going to be moving out for college soon and needed a computer i figured id grab it and see if it even worked. So i hooked it up and started it and it brought me to a screen where apparently to use macs, you need a user name and password. Be it that i didnt buy this mac and found it litterally 50 feet from my apartment i dont know how to get in it. I was wondering if some knows how to, hopefully for free, if not very inexpensively, bypass the username/password function, or else change it to my own......anything to make this computer usable for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot in advance for your help.
Matt

Most likely you will need to find a bootable
disk and reboot with it. That will give you
access to changing passwords so that
your new Mac will work for you.

One source for getting a bootable disk
would be to buy a disk editor or the like.
They always come with bootable disks.

Or you might try eBay or a local computer
store, especially those that deal in used
computers. Mac stuff is very cheap used
as most dealers don't like it around (They
would starve to death servicing a
computer that hardly ever has problems).

You could also contact your local
recycling hotline to find out who recycles
used computers in your area.

Also check Goodwill and other similar
junk stores. Often they will have books
with bootable disks or even disks laying
around. Check the disk specs in the
books to find out if the disks are bootable
or not. Sometimes it will say right on the
disk. A lot of programs come on bootable
disks, but not all. Sometimes the only
way is to try them.

Regardless, you must find documention,
like Sad Mac, or whatever, that tells you
how to boot a bootable disk on a Mac.
That info should be readily available on
the internet, or possibly from the Apple
website.

For more info you could post questions in
the tek-tips.com forums.
