jpg won't open in Appleworks

imac 350,OS9,Netscape4.72. When I double click on a jpg image on my hard drive It opens fine using picture viewer but if I select Appleworks it won't. Appleworks loads when I select it but the image doesn't appear. One time a box appeared that I thought was going to be it but it was blank window with "button bar" at the top of it and seven little icon box's right below it.
