I believe the same thing happened to me, altough I don't remember exactly what the error message said.
I went to the "downloads" section of the Apple website, did a search on "java" and downloaded the most recent version of java something-or-other. Sorry I don't remember what it was called, but it had a 4 in its name. Chat now works better than before.
