OS: MacOS 9.2.2
CPU/Ram: 450 MH 1 Gig Ram
Comment:

Ive recently ( a few months back) installed OSX 10.1 after lots of hesitation., and havent really been able to get into it because it's so slooow compared to 9.2.2..keep in mind that i've a 450 MHZ chip and a Gig of ram, and still..
Usually the way it always seems to work is the newer the OS the slower, and although I rather like the look and functionality of 10.3, especially now that it's getting cheaper because of Tiger now..i don't want to spend money i can hardly afford to part with if it will be too slow..i'm on a *terribly* fixed income...
Anyone know?
Thanx...

Hi,
What do you use your computer primarily for? if its just for browsing and emails then keep Panther (10.3.9 last update). With OSX you will get all the goody features but the basic look and feel is still the same, so you wont see any noticable changes on the desktop. Now that tiger has just come out, with first patch released in its wise may be to wait for some more time before you go a next level.

Well I tried both the OS-X versions. Panther on my iMAC G3 with 380 MB ram did just fine. bit slow though, yeah, but define slow, can you work faster than the computer?

Bottomline, is stay on Panther if ur really **tight** on ur budget.

regards

10.3.x Panther works fine on a G3 running at over
300MHz, provided you have enough ram (in your case,
1GB is ample). I've been running Panther on my 400MHz
iMac G3 for a while now, with 512MB of RAM installed,
and I've never had a problem with it.

I think version 10.1 of OS X had a few problems that made
it feel quite sluggish compared to OS 9, however this was
fixed in 10.2, and furthur improved with 10.3. Great thing
about Panther now is that installer disks will become more
available on eBay etc, since some people are already
upgrading to Tiger.
