ipod stuck in re-formatting mode

My ipod worked perfectly until yesterday. Now, when I plug it into my CPU, rather than updating the song files, it shows a disc with a magnifying glass, the "re-formatting" mode. All my songs have been deleted, and when the re-formatting is done, the ipod appears to be ready to go. It works the way it does without any song files in it. But when I connect it to the G3, even my friend's G4, it goes right into re-formatting mode again. iTunes doesn't recognize the ipod, either. Is there anything I can do?
