Subject: invisible Mac downloads
Comment:

I'm having problems downloading some video files (wmv especially, but not exclusively). I have an iMac running OSX and use the built in 56k modem to access the net through earthlink. Files often "download" through Explorer and the download bar moves all the way to the right over the course of a couple of minutes, but the files are nowhere to be found on my computer. They appear as downloaded in the download manager but they cannot be found using Sherlock (whether by looking by filename, filetype, date created or any other parameter you can think of). They are not in the file I've designated as my download folder in Explorer's preferences either. Where are these files going and how do I get to them? Are they only viewable by PC? Thanks.

Throw out the Explorer prefs, try using a different browser, try turning the post-processing off, etc.

.wmv files are streaming audio/video files
-- or are typically presented as such in my
experience -- and will be stored only in
your internet cache unless you
control-click them and choose "Download
link to disk." Although, if your missing
files appear in your download manager
that suggests they should be in your
downloads folder. Hmmm...well follow
pickle's advice and be certain you're
selecting download link to disk if you're
not doing so already. Also, to view .wmv
files you must have Windows Media
Player for Mac. Grab it here:

Look for files renamed with names starting with IETemp or IE.Temp. I noticed the same problem on my Dad's iBook.

I can't remember if QuickTime causes the problem or if it's an Explorer problem, or a QuickTime plug-in for Explorer problem or whatever.

All I know is that I don't have that problem when I use iCab to surf the web. iCab is a better and faster browser anyway, and it doesn't do weird things to my hard drive, like Explorer or Netscape.
