Comment: My internal system disk crashed and sos disk detected an "invalid sibling link 4,5" but was not able to repaired it. So, I created a new install of OS 9 on another part of the same disk, in order to work. But the old partition is still sick.... What does it mean, and what can I do ? Thank you

Reply: (edit)To explain sibling links, first you need to understand that most directory information on Macintosh disks is stored in data structures that are technically known as B*-trees. Examples of B*-trees on a Macintosh disk include the Catalog File, the Extents Overflow File, the Desktop Database, the Users & Groups File, and several others. Each tree has a number of data records; for example, each record within the Catalog tree describes one file or one folder. The records are sorted and indexed for fast searching. But for efficiency, the records are also grouped into fixed-length blocks called nodes; because these nodes can be physically scattered around the B*-tree file, they need pointers to indicate their logical ordering. So a given node has a "forward link", which points to the node containing records that are logically immediately after the records in the current node; likewise, a node has a "backward link", pointing to the node containing logically preceding records. If these linkages are pointing to the wrong place, some files or folders might be inaccessible. Or the OS could even hang up trying to find some. This makes the link invalid. In any case, Norton Disk Doctor reports forward link and backward link problems separately, whereas Disk First Aid just refers to them collectively as sibling links. Try DiskWarrior to build a new directory. May fix the problem without having to initialize the disk.

Reply: (edit)My drive also came up with an invalid sibling link. It's a laptop with only one partition which is running 10.1.1. Classic is not even installed. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)I also got an invalid sibling link with my powerbook running os 10.1.2. So the partitian that has os 9 wont mount, and disk utility wont repair it. I dont want to have to reformat my drive again (fourth time in two months), is there an os x program that will fix the problem?

Reply: (edit)My sibling problem has an interesting twist. The drive is an external firewire. It mounts perfectly when I start from 9.2.2. When I start up from 10.1.3, or if I'm in 10.1.3 and plug the drive in, I get the following alert... "A disk attempting to mount as unknown has failed verification or has failed to mount. Please use Disk utility to check the disk and correct any errors.'" So I launch Disk utility, check the disk, and get the notice "Invalid Sibling Link" and disk first aid won't fix it. But get this, if I start in 9.2.2, the disk mounts, then I change the startup disk and restart in 10.1.3 and it mounts fine. But I restart in 10.1.3 and I get the invalid sibling link. Just thought I'd add that in case it might help someone recover lost data. So, obviously I think this problem is an OSX bug.

Reply: (edit)Just had the exact same problem.. External firewire (LaCie 60 gig), OSX 10.1.3, worked once, then later gives me the same mount error.. Disk First Aid says "Invalid Sibling Link". Haven't tried it just under OS9, will do that, thanks. Hope this gets fixed soon.

Reply: (edit)Have the same "invalid sibling link" problem... but... OS9.1 on Powerbook3400/240. It's not letting my application programs open... listing them as "not found." Will take a look at Disk Warrior, but what results has anyone had with Norton Utilities? will check back. Thanks.
