Comment: Hello, I was just wondering what your thoughts are on the G4 Powerbook VS the Intel Centrino. For this example lets use their lowest machines Centrino 1.3mhz and the G4 867. 1. Which is faster for the buck? Fully loaded Dell Machine Centrino vs low end powerbook at same price? 2. What are the advantages/disadvantages? 3. If you're doing graphics what would you choose? 4. Whose battery life is better? 5. Any other thoughts or points worth noting. Any suggestions would be great Thanks!

Reply: (edit)I'd get the Powerbook just because it's got OSX and a Dell has XP. OSX is the sole biggest reason to buy a Mac. In my experience with an iBook the battery life is better than the Inspiron I used to have, by a large margin.

Reply: (edit)sorry the mac would piss over the centrino, its purely just a downscaled P4 chip so the small power supply in the thinner laptops can last longer.. the OSX is much less taxing on the system CPU/MEMORY then XP,so u would get much more speed for its spec..the memory useage is better on the mac, PLUS!! it hasa Radeon!! which would piss over the max speed centrinos which are barely Geforce Go chips.. ON TOP OF THAT.. the only quality display which would almost compare with the mac would be a sony.. which is twice the price!! join the sexy generation.. APPLE! (either that or fork out 2 grand for a sony)

Reply: (edit)I have the dell 1.3 centrino. I would equate the speed of that chip with about a p4 2ghz. Battery life is about 4 hours (depending on use). Mine has the sxga screen (1400x1050). The cpu is denfinitly not a downgrade p4, it's a complete redesign starting with a p3. Uses sse2, 1meg l2 cache, 400mhz front side bus. the ibook with 15" screen is only 1280x854, as well you don't get ddr ram with it, not sure what vid card they have but my dell has a radeon 9000 built in.

Reply: (edit)Go for the powerbook g4, without a doubt the better of the two, but see if you can save up for the 1ghz g4 powerbook its lush. and if you dont go for a mac make sure you dont run windoze on the laptop run linux mandrake9 or RH8 or you could even run bsd. Have fun with whatever you choose
