Subject: Installing OS X 10.3 ProblemsOS: 9.1/10.3 (Nothing Really)CPU/Ram: PowerBook G3/Around 300mb |
Comment: I am trying to install OS X 10.3. When I originally started I had OS 9.1 on the computer (PowerBook G3). But, when I popped in the OS X CD, I went to disk utility and formated the harddrive because I wanted to install OS X on a blank harddrive. Now, my problem is that when I go to install OS X, when I get to the screen where I choose the installation directory and click on the image of my blank harddrive, the image has a litte red "!" and the text below reads "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. An earlier version of Mac OS X is not installed." Thanks This has been,Voletix

Reply: (edit)Bummer, You'll need a full install disk set, or indeed 10.2.x full install disks in order to get the panther in. Previously there was a way to bypass the "upgrade" situation but the hack, I believe ,was removed after jaguar, when everyone found out it was there--and mac fix it and other sites were forced to remove the hack from their site by apple. Panther has run on my old G3's before I replaced them with G4s so you should be OK there. Tiger will be out soon and the cost of Panther will drop dramatically. So I'd wait to buy any full disks, or see if someone wants to dump their Panther disks when Tiger comes out. I've heard reports that Tiger won't run on anything less than a G4, guess we'll see
