I have tried to install Office 98 on Mac 10.1.3 for my mother. I am a PC user who knows nothing about Mac, but am getting an error that OS 9 or later must be installed to install Office 98 or be run in Classic mode. WHat is Classic mode and how do I get this software to install? Many thanks in advance from a Mac illiterate......btw, it is an iMac.....

you will have to install Office 98 when you are actually booted into Mac OS 9 itself, not Mac OS X 10.1.3.
To reboot into Mac OS 9 goto Apple menu > System Preferences... When the Sys prefs appear, choose 'Startup disk' , then select Mac OS 9 from the list and click 'Restart'. After reboot, you'll be in Mac OS 9 (hopefully) and you can then install Office 98.
Classic environment/mode is simply Mac OS 9 built INTO Mac OS X itself. Classic mode is used to use old classic programs on the newer Mac OS. (10.0 and upwards)
I hope this solution works. If not you can get back to me via e-mail : wackymacs@spymac.com
