Subject: installing 10.4?OS: XP pro/LinuxCPU/Ram: 384mb-1gigModel/Manufacturer: Many |
Comment: I got fed up with my Grape iMac, and bought a Snow, (500mhz, 30gig 384mb, OS 9.2). So, now I want to install 10.4 on it, but I can't find the disk that I used to install on the Grape. I was wondering if there was anyway that I could install 10.4 from the Grape to the Snow? I most likely won't be using the Grape anymore, and if I do, I could use 9.(whatever) on it. I just want OSX on my Snow now!! I'm asking this because I read somewhere about shutting down one mac, hooking them both up with a USB cable, then turning it back on and using it like an external HDD or something?!?! Oh, yeah. One more thing. The install on the Grape never went perfect. I had problems with the whole 8 gig first partition thing. This is the reason that I got fed up with the Grape. The Grape works perfect, it's just that the Snow is slot loading and I won't have to worry about the whole 8 gig thing. Thoughts????? Old stuff that still works, somewhat....

Reply: (edit)Yes and No. No, you could not copy an OSX install from one machine to another. Yes, you probably could copy all the files off of the Install CD's to one machine, put it into disk mode, and then use that machine as an external HD, but no, you could not boot from that machine. Reply: (edit)Actually, you can. But it requires an external HD case. First, download and install the firmware updated to the Snow need to run OS X. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.... Then, pull the hard drive out of the Snow and put it in an external HD case. Plug it into the Grape, use Disk Utility to erase and format the external drive (with OS 9 drivers if needed) then use SuperDuper! to clone the HD start-up partition on the Grape to the external drive (this will take a while as USB 1 is painfully slow). Pull the HD out of the external and put it back in the Snow and you now have OS X on your Snow.

Reply: (edit)Two things. 1) This sounds like fun!! I want to do it.
2) I think that the original 10.4 disk is in the same place as my external drive cases, in some box in a storage unit!! I'll see what I can come up with. I'm not really too knowledgable about Macs and their file system, which is why I got one, but I guess that I'm up to learning!! Thanks. Old stuff that still works, somewhat....
