OS: OSX 10.2.8
CPU/Ram: 1 GHz G4 Mac 768MB RAM
Comment:

I have a G4 iMac running OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and I want to upgrade my system to Tiger. Before I do it, I want to back up my stuff.
When I try to copy the Applications folder on to a DVD using Toast, I get a message saying: The file "InfoPlist.strings" could not be accessed. (Data fork, -5000).
When I click OK, Toast abandons the attempt to copy the folder. I've done a search and there are hundreds of infoPlist.strings in my system.
Anybody know how I can get round this problem?

Su

Likely a corrupted data file, and yeah, since there's so many .plist files, i'd make a folder on the dvd called 'applications' and copy the folders one at a time until you find the bad one...then skip the part that's got the .plist file.
I thnk, however, you should look into alternate means of backing up your files , if at all possible. OSX is not at all like OS9 in that even if you restore everything back where it would appear it should be, things often don't work right.
Unfortunately, i myself haven't done that either, as i'm just now myself looking into the best way to do the same thing (i want to upgrade my 10.15 to 10.3x).
Maybe someone else whose done it can offer suggestions....

A third party backup utility such as retrospect, tri-backup,
etc.
As for the -5000 error, most likely one of the programs is
damaged and needs reinstalled.

Su,

All the above is good and valid advice... my 2 cents'
worth is that the fact that the Infoplist.string (which is one
of the Preferences files for each function of each program)
is corrupted illustrates how easily files can be, and are,
corrupted. That's why I generally just save the actual data
files and reinstall programs from their CDs, either as-
needed (if they don't work after upgrade), or if I'm feeling
really radical, reformat the HD and reinstall everything
from scratch. Yeah, it takes time. So does tracking down
and fixing problems caused by corruptions. Lots of it.
Good on ya!
Jim
