Indeo isn't working for me

I have an iMac. I have Quicktime 5.0. I
have Indeo 3,4, and 5 IN MY
EXTENSIONS FOLDER and I've restarted
my computer. When I drag an avi file into
my Quicktime Player, it does one of two
things. It either(this is the most common)
does absolutely nothing, but starts the
player and does not bring up the screen,
or it brings up the screen and gives me
the same bulls--- about me not having
the right comprssor, when I clearly do
have all the Indeo compressors offered in
the Apple software database. What the
hell is the matter???!!!! I am very angry
because I've taken the time to hunt down
the software, install it, read directions and
everything, but still nothing works. I love
Macs, but my faith in them is waning.
Please, please, please, someone help
me and don't give me any bulls--- about
dragging the Indeo files into my
Extensions folder, because I've done it.
I'm looking for real solutions here, so
please, no half baked, inept responses
because I'm a man on a mission and
have no time for monkeying around. I
didn't pay good money for a computer that
can't even play avi files, so please please
only responses that are HELPFUL and
will solve my problem. This is my last
resort, so please don't let me down.

You're probably trying to view an AVI encoded with a different Indeo codec than what QuickTime supports. Have you tried (gasp!) Windoze Media Player for the Mac?

Yes, of course. I have Windows Media
Player 7 installed and it won't even
highlight itself when I hover an avi file over
it. It won't even open an avi file when I try
"File, Open..." But there is something that
concerns me. All the stuff that I have read
about Indeo says that Quicktime 3 is
required to use Indeo 3 and 4. Is it simply
that Quicktime 5 can't use Indeo 3, 4, or 5?
Please resond anyone!!!!!

While I haven't really done much with AVIs, I rather doubt that QuickTIme 4 or 5 *lost* the ability to use the earlier codecs. I think those codecs are old enough that Apple is simply cautioning users against using them with QuickTime 2.x, which was in wide distribution at the time they first came out. It should probably be read as "QuickTime 3 or higher."

Ok, ok.......I downloaded an entire avi file,
opened it up in my Quicktime player, and
found what which codec was used. It
was Div3, which is DivX and mp3
combined I found out. So after much
searching I found a Divx codec for Macs,
an Alpha version from the Divx site. With
that in my extensions folder, I was able to
get the video going but not the sound.
Then I discovered that I had also
downloaded a DivX Validator for the
sound and I used it on my avi file. The
familiar Quicktime file logo for my avi file
became an avi file with just a "piece of
paper" logo. That got both the sound and
video to work simotaneously, but the
sound is approximately one second
behind the video. Do you know how to fix
this, or is this just a drawback of being on
the frontier path of Mac divx?

I tried using that Validator on many files,
and apparently they became corrupted, because
QuickTime reported a bug in the coding of the
movie. Now, it did work on ONE movie, but now
the picture disappears a third of the way
into the movie. How does DivX explain
