iMac won't start

My first generation iMac just won't start. My husband tried plugging the machine in again and pushing the cables and it started, but then went off. Is there an easy way to check the power supply components? I imagine it is a fault with the cable or incoming power parts as yesterday it worked fine. I'd appreciate any help as I don't want to take it for repair if it isn't necessary. Thanks

First thing to check would be the PRAM battery. It shouldn't be dead at this point, but if you've been leaving the machine unplugged while you're not using it, that can kill a PRAM battery pretty fast.
www.theimac.com should have most of the info you need.
