Hi Guys - can you help?
My friends IMac won't boot. It sounds the chimes when you turn it on but then a folder comes on the screen and flashes a question mark and smiley face alternatively. It was running 0S 8.0 but has recently been upgraded to OS 9.0 and then OS 10. My friend does not have the boot disks for OS 9.0 and OS 10.
He managed to boot using the original boot utility disk from OS 8.0 but his desktop icons have all gone and OS 8.0 doesn't recognise the hard drive.
Is it possible to purchase another boot utility disk for OS 10 that would:-
1) boot the machine?
2) recognise the hard-drive?
The thing is he hasn't backed up his data and doesn't want to loose any as it is important.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Boot using the OS 8 CD.
Open the Startup Disk control panel.
Set the iMac to boot from the hard disk.
