It trys to start then shuts down. I hear the
chime. I unplugged the vga plug it tries to
start and doesn't shut down but after a
few minutes it started making wierd
noises, so I unplugged it . If I unplug ac it
will try to start then quit in 4 seconds ,
then it won't start again till it has been
unplugged from ac again for about 5
minutes. I'v e read some post that illuded
to the anolog board, and some that
blamed the video board , but I didn't see a
definete conclusion. any help would be
gladly accepted. thanks

Did you recently upgrade to OS X without upgrading your firmware?

OK, it sounds like your analogue board has just given up the ghost. It'll need to be replaced.

can you tell me why when I disconect the
vga cord it will try to power up and not
shut down, which makes me wonder that
possibly the power supply is working, or
is that I.ve taken alot of the load off the
power supply by disconnecting the vga
cable. Also where can I get the board and
how expensive is it? BTW thanks for the
fast response.

Why? Eh, could be a lot of things, but something has clearly failed on the analogue board.

eBay is probably as good a bet as any for a replacement, though I think a couple of the other regulars remember some suppliers of iMac repair parts other than eBay.

One thing's for sure - your Apple dealer is *not* the place to do it if you're on a budget.
