Does the unit power up at all? Powering up means checking for hard drive noises, CD drive noises, etc. and does NOT mean just a blank screen/no startup sound.

If you do get the noises, try resetting the PRAM by holding all of these keys while powering the unit up: CTRL + OPTION + P + R and hold until unit does boot or 30 sec. whichever comes first.

You could also try resetting the PMU, except that there are a whole bunch of models and the method to reset varies from model to model, so "iMac G3" is not very useful information. Go to www.apple.com/support and type in your serial number in the "support coverage" box near the bottom left of the page to see exactly which model you have, then search for "reset PMU iMac G3 xxxxx" where xxxxx=your model.

did the flashing complete, or did the machine power off during the update? Did you read the instructions before attempting this? This is usually a 2 step process on older machines. usually you start the update by lauching it, then IMPORTANT! you need to press and hold in the interrupt button while the machine restarts(if I remember correctly) and you hear a beep, you will see a progress bar apprear for about 30 sec. or so ,and then the machine will restart with the new firmware.

If you did not follow the instructions, or the mac lost power while flashing, the ROM files could be corrupted and the machine will not boot, ever again. Well unless you take out the ROM, hack the apple updater file and remove the ROM image, and use a third party flash rom burner to put the image back on the ROM chip. Otherwise, time for a new motherboard! This is only if the update failed of course, most likely the instructions were not followed "to the letter" and a step was missed, probably holding in the interrupt button, or such.
