Comment: My daughter has an original iMac...the cd drive is more or less defective...sometimes you can load things on, sometimes not at all...I can hear it klunk, klunk, speed up, slow down etc...needs replacement... I want to upgrade to OS 9.1...Can I get an external USB CD drive, and load 9.1 from there???...will it recognize the external CD on boot and run the setup or do I have to boot completely to current OS and then start the upgrade??? I have looked around Apple site for a replacement CD drive...can't find anything...a refurbished drive would be ok... Anyone know a good source??? Many thanx Steve

Reply: (edit)fieraci's source for the drives looks like a good one. An external USB drive will not be bootable, but you don't have to be booted from the 9.1 CD in order to upgrade except on 1st-gen Power Macs (the x100 series). p
