I have an older IMAC with OS 9.2 on it and I would like to back up the hard drive to my PC via Ethernet connection dirctly between the two machines. How do I go about doing this, and is it possible to use the Word/Excel files from the Mac on the PC?

You'll need to look into Macintosh file reading solutions for XP - try the XP forum for that or www.macwindows.com.
Office docs are interchangeable.

To elaborate, Office docs are interchangeable, as long as you name them correctly. Mac OS and some older versions of Office (98 and possibly 2001) allow you to use just about any character you want in a file name. Windows doesn't like some of those characters. Just keep the names simple and append the appropriate extension (.doc, .xls, etc.).
