iMac screen lines?

Hi, i have an iMac (swivel version) and the screen now has loads of lines down it and if i open ay boxes etc the lines change colour and move ocasionally where the box is or was! If you change the colours to thousands rather than millions the lines get more spaced out but just as bad. Can anyone help me? is there a defragment thing for a mac?
