In response to iMac, scanner, OS 9 and OS X (March 16 2003)...
I managed to get the Epson Twain Driver v5.75a to work! Download and install 5.75a for OSX then download and install 5.73a for OS 9 & 8. Here is a link to the Epson America site for all current drivers:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/ supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=14587&infoType=Downloads
If the link ends up out of date, navigate to Drivers and Downloads for the Epson Perfection 2400 scanner.
It should magically work without a restart - set Image Capture to use TWAIN driver whenever possible and you should eventually be presented with a small screen that has little more than a few options and a scan button - the scan button will take you to the Epson Twain driver - click Cancel then Manual Control to get out of automatic mode. You can then adjust the settings for your scan.
The results using the Epson driver are much brighter and have better focus - I scan 3D objects and was horrified at how dark the scanner was, but this turned out to be just the lame driver used by Image Capture.
AS FOR OS 9 COMPATIBILITY IN MAC OS 10.2.6 - HERE IS THE RESPONSE FROM EPSON AMERICA:
---
The "cannot find scanner on the bus" message is due to Jaguar (OS 10.2 or higher) not working with scanners with OS 9 programs.
This is an issue with Jaguar's Classic itself, the scanner worked perfectly in OS 10.1 Classic. A fix from Apple for this isn't forseeable, unfortunately, as Apple has apparently dropped support of Classic and OS 9 - they no longer distribute either.
If you can install OS 9 on the computer, then the scanner will work fine with Epson Smart Panel, Elements and other OS 9 scanning programs.
Otherwise, in OS X the scanner will work with Image Capture, and any other OS X scanning program you obtain and install.
---
So, if you can boot in OS 9 then you can install the scanner software correctly from the CD. If you can't boot from OS 9 because all you have is Classic mode under OS X (iMac 1Ghz users), then you will have to rely on Image Capture to use the Epson Twain driver and set your Image Capture preferences to send the image to your desired application after it has been scanned (eg. change Preview to Photoshop).
