hey guys,
i've searched for relating problems, but nothing really was the same as my particular situation.

My imac used to flicker a bit...you would see the "shock" in the screen..but then one day, i did it a bunch and just shut down.

so i started it up...it chimmed, the orange light was on...it would switch to the green light, and then shut off, right after. but then when i try and press the ON button again, it wont..i have to unplug it for a while, and then it'll do the same process.

I already changed the clock battery...that didnt do anything..help!

typical problem with bad flyback transformer.
you can try by hooking a mac multisync monitor to the db-15 connector of the imac.

Hmm ... my first thought is a PRAM problem.
Sometimes just changing the battery doesn't do the
trick. On the logic, there's a small button, normally
with the words PMU RESET (or somethihg similar)
near it. On Rev.A boards, the button is next to the
processor card input. (Although, I've not heard of a
Rev.A 500Mhz iMac, unless you've upgraded it.)
Remove the battery, press the button once,
put the battery in, wait for a minute, and turn on the
computer and see if it's more friendly.

hey guys.

thanx for the quick replies...

first of all, i did upgrade my computer a while back..hence the 500 mhz speed.

i've tried pressing the small button on the computer, but it didnt help. although i dont think i pressed it while the clock battery was out...maybe i'll try that.

what i dont get is why i can't try and start the computer again, after i tried once (i have to unplug, then plug in the power)..does anyone know if thats a symptom of the bad Flyback Transformer??

i thought maybe the motherboard just fried..and i'd have to get a new one..(would i have to get one from a RevA model, or would the RevB+ work?)

should i try to get a new flyback transformer for it first? even though i have no clue what that is!...

thanx for the input.

Rich

as I suggested, try hooking up the multisync mac monitor and see if you get the picture on the screen.

hey, thanx budm...now i gotta find time to try that out...the only monitor i have is an old mac monitor that i used for a quadra 605...if the cable does fit, will it work, even though the monitor was used for a 256 color? (or does that even matter?)

where is the flyback transformer located, exactly? anyone know where to purchase one? thanx a lot.

Your old monitor from the Quadra should work. This is exactly what happened to my iMac, and what I did was I went out and bought a 19inch monitor, and a signal converter. I was up and running in no time.
Good Luck.

FYI: Later on I ripped the gutz out of my imac and mounted them in a briefcase, no joke.

Still works too!

hey jason, thanx for the reply...

so i hooked up the monitor from the quadra that i had laying around...i noticed that the connector from the imac monitor had all the pins there, but the connector from the old macintosh monitor had a few pins missing.

but i tried it anyways. I started up the computer; the imac turned on, and stayed on - unlike before:good. the light on the imac stayed orange, though...which i assumed was alright, since i wasn't using the imac monitor.

the old mac monitor powered up, but it stayed a black screen.....?? did i do anything wrong?

can i use a PC monitor, or does it have to be mac? my friend has a newer G4 desktop, so i'm gonna try to take my imac there and try that out....any input? thanx.

hey gang.

well, some good news. all you people that suggested that it was my monitor were correct! i got a monitor from a friend and hooked it up to my imac, and it worked with no problems.

I'm now going to take the imac computer and attempt to stick it in a PC desktop case.

one question: is this possible?! heh...i know i can figure a way to rig the computer itself into the case, but i dont know what to do about the power cord..plus i'm not too sure where those other wires (excluding the monitor cable, obviously) need to be...any insight? thanx.!
