Subject: Imac OSX so horribly slow! Help!
OS: 10.2.6
CPU/Ram: G3 600 mgh 128 ram
Comment:

I recently got another imac, used from ebay for my
business. This new computer is so horribly slow
and I can't figure out why. OSX, 128 mg ram, 600
G3 processor. I am using DSL for internet. At
home, I have a 350 processor imac with 64 ram
and its got to be 15 to 20 times faster than this
new one. I mean, this new computer is SLOW!!!! I
can hardly function with it. It doesn't matter what
program or how many programs I have open, it is
so, so, SO slow. Lagging and printing problems...
It takes me an incredibly long time just to bring up
an already open document or program from the
dock. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it a low
memory problem? I just can't stand it anymore! I
am not getting anything done. I take work home
with me to do on my older computer because this
one is so slow. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Trish

It could be a few things. First of all, 128 MB is barely enough to run OS X. Secondly, if it has anything under OS 10.3 (panther), forget it, it's not even worth trying to fix. OS 10.2 and below run EXTREMELY slow on G3s. The only OS X I could ever get to work on my 350MHz iMac is 10.3

Check to see if you have alot of free space on your disk, if not, you could have a print log or such that has grown so big that it bogs you down to a crawl. Have you tried booting from a restore disk and repair your permissions? This too will cause it to do strange things. As will a bad PRAM battery. Just some possibilities that I have run across in my repairs. Good Luck.

too little ram - I'm suprised the 64 runs osx at all. These
machines did well under 8.6 or 9, but osx tends to be very
slow. Most people who use osx have a minimum of 512 if
not more
