iMac monitor not on @ boot

A new problem I'm having with my iMac G3/400 DV slot-loader...when I boot the puter, the screen won't turn on. I can hear the machine going through it's boot processes and when they're over, if I hit the power button again as though to put the computer to sleep, the monitor will come back on and all will be well.
I haven't installed anything recently that makes me think there's a conflict, although I'll check for that. In the meantime, is this something that's common? Fixable? Am I reduced to hitting the power button to turn on the monitor until I can replace it?
