Imac lost internal modem

I'm attempting to fix my friend's imac. A week ago it decided to stop recognising its internal modem, and now only built in ethernet is shown under network port configurations. I have to say im more of a windows expert, is there a chance a modem service has managed to disable itself, or has the modem itself died?

Being an iMac, chances are that the modem has died. You can get this part of the logic board replaced, but you would be much better off - cost wise - getting an external USB modem.
