My Dad was working on his iMac G5 when it ran an update. After the update it told him to restart. After restarting it goes to the white screen with the Apple logo in the middle and the spinning gear thing on the bottom and it will just stay there. Ten minutes would go by and nothing happens, it just hangs there at that screen. After about 30 seconds the fans start spinning at a high RPM and it would just stay there.

Reinstall your operating system from the system disks that
were provided with your computer when you purchased it.
Insert the Tiger Install DVD, reboot your iMac G5 and press C
while it boots, this will force it to boot from the DVD.

Then restore your OS from the disc, this will keep your
settings and backup your old Home and System files.
