imac (350 MHz, slot loading G3) won't boot off the hard drive nor the CD. the system makes the normal sound and then just displays a flashing question mark. booting from the CD displays a flashing system folder.

i've tried all the regular keyboard presses (reset PRAM, reset NVRAM, ...). the machine will not come up in open firmware mode. i pulled the hard drive and read it with another computer and it appears good.

any clues on why this imac won't boot from either hard drive nor CD?

Did you hold the 'c' key down when you tried to boot off the cd. Also, look through past posts on this forum. I have seen a couple of useful things do in situations like yours.

I have the same 350GHz iMac. I had the EXACT same problem as you, but unfortunately, it was my Hard Drive that broke. I lost all my data... Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did :-(

I am thinking that that some system software is corrupt. What system are you running? If it is OS9 try rebooting from a cd and hold down the 'c' key when rebooting and then go to disk docter in the utilites folder.
