I turned on my imac this morning and was getting on the internet when all of a sudden it froze.. (kinda freaked me out since it's a mac and not windows)
so i had to reboot.. i turned the mac off... when i turn it back on the little white light lights up but thats it... you can here that initial little click before the mac sound, and the hard drive and fan spinning, but it goes nowhere... please help.... i use this for work and i don't know what i will do if it is dead.. any suggestions?

hmmm.. i opened it up.. replaced the lith battery and that didnt work... i was getting scared because apple pulled it up and there is no warranty left on it... but then i was messing with it and suddenly it popped on and started fine.. i backed up all my stuff just in case, but so far so good.. i have reset the PRAM now and restarted a couple times and it seems to be working fine... i hope it truly is fixed, but i would still like to know what caused it... any ideas?

Sounds like it might have just forgotten the boot disk setting. Happens on occasion, though the newer iMacs are much better about not forgetting than the older ones were.

If it's a flat-panel iMac, it's still under warranty. Insist Apple fix it for free.

I called apple again and this guy said it is still under warranty... thank goodness.. but i will still have to pay $50 to get troubleshooting to find out what it is... pretty lame if you ask me.. if something goes wrong they shouldnt be able to make money by telling you what is wrong, they should just fix it.. oh well

If it's under warranty, you shouldn't have to pay *anything*.

Did the Apple fone rep try to charge the $50, or a local AASP? If the latter, bitch at them. If the former, insist to speak with a supervisor. Warranty repair means warranty repair, not "Pay us $50 and we'll do what we're supposed to do for free."

it was the guy at Apple... he said that the 90 days free tech support ran out so it would cost $50 for them to tell me anything...
the only local service center is backed up for 4 days so this is really gonna suck.. i guess i will take it in tomorrow and hope its done next week... wont be able to get much work done though

Is this the first time you've called? Because the 90 days of free tech support doesn't start until you call the first time...

4 days isn't too bad of a back log. And it'll be free...

Start from the OS X CD and run Disk First
Aid. You can also start in single user
mode (hold down command-s at startup)
After the machine churns through a bunch
of UNIX stuff type fsck -y at he prompt.
This is file system check. If when it has
finished it says something was fixed run it
again. Do this until it comes up clean.
