Subject: iMac Analog Board? OS: 9.1 CPU/Ram: 233 G3/ 32MB

Comment: My daughters iMac (Blue - tray loading Rev.A) won't start up. When you press the power button it kicks on for a few seconds and then turns off again. From what I've read on this and other sites it appears this is the result of a bad Analog board. But before I make that investment I just wanted to check that the other symptoms are consistent with that diagnosis. After I've started it once it won't respond to the power switch again unless I disconnect the power cord for a while. If I remove the DB15 video cable from the connector the computer will boot up normally. I know that because my daughter has the speech feature turned on and it complains about not being able to reach the web-site she has as default. I have replaced the CRT as I thought it was that originally (not enough research). One of the messages on this forum suggested that I could test the analog problem diagnosis using an external monitor connected to the DB15 port but I don't have a standard Mac monitor anymore and I tried to connect an external multi-sync monitor to the port using a MAC-SVGA adapter but the iMac then doesn't even make the chime on start-up and just stops with the amber light on (but doesn't switch off). Unfortunately the adapter is of the type that allows you to set the resolution for fixed frequency monitors and that may be the cause of the iMac stopping. Any other ideas?

Reply: (edit)You could proabably get an iMac such as this one (used in good working condition) for 200-300 dollars on ebay. Already you have replaced the CRT, and bought a monitor adapter. What else have you bought that you do not mention? Is it really worth your time and money to try changing all these parts to merely attempt to fix yours rather than buy another one?

Reply: (edit)The CRT only cost me $25 and the monitor adapter I already had. That's all I've invested. While it would be possible to buy another one off eBay it's possible that it would suffer the same problems since it seems a common malady. In addition my daughter would lose all of her data on the current computer (I'm not sure how to get data off an IDE based MAC) and I'd spend probably the same or more time setting up a replacement the way her old one was.
