Subject: iMac 500Mhz CD-RW drive broke...help?
Comment:

Hello, I hope someone can help me. I just rec'd (about 1 month ago) a Snow iMac (500MHz, 20 GB, 256RAM, Mac OS 9.2 and 10.1) with a Mats-[won't let me print because name has a bad word]-a CW-7121 CD-RW drive.

I've stayed mostly in OS9.2, and I've been playing with iTunes 2.0.2 and my CD collection. I've been listening to my CDs on the iMac and ripping MP3s from them. This morning I put an audio CD in, the drive spun up, and then began making a clicking sound as it spun. When I hit "eject", I heard a single loud click and sliding sound (best I can describe it). The CD ejected fine, but now when I insert a CD, the drive sounds like it tries to spin up, then stops. This happens two or three times before it automatically rejects the CD.

I took a look inside Apple System Profiler to see if I could get the CD drive info from it, and I noticed in the "Devices" tab that it knew I didn't have a volume mounted in the CD drive. So I tried, on a lark, to insert a CD. This time in spun up and the CD appeared on my desktop. I ejected, quit ASP, and tried again, but no luck. I've been unable to get a CD to mount since then.

ANY HELP? Please don't say my drive needs replacing.

Hopefully,
Yash

Unfortunately, it sounds like your drive needs replacing.

Fortunately, they're not that expensive.

Unfortunately, finding a slot-loading one might be kinda difficult :(

Gosh! It's still under warranty, so I hope it's covered.

Update: I managed to get it to read data CDs, although there was the clicking sound as the disk spun.

I subsequently was able to get audio CDs also to read and play, but the clicking is still there. It sounds like something might be loose?

Any other ideas?

Thanks
Yash

If it's still under warranty, RUN, don't walk, to your local service provider and have it fixed. It's covered.
