Subject: iMac 333 firmware update - HELP!
OS: Mac OS 8.5
CPU/Ram: 333MHz/64meg RAM
Comment:

I recently bought a blueberry iMac 333 with a 6GB HD and 64 megs or RAM. I have the OS 9.something (I don't remember) OS installation CD, but when I try to install it, a system message pops up that says the firmware needs to be updated.
I have surfed for more than 3 hours trying to find the firmware it needs, but can not locate it.

Can someone post a URL where I can find this firmware update?

Thanks!
Cliff

BTW ... I'm a complete noob to Mac hardware/software as this is my first Mac. I am used to using BeOS and Zeta on PC hardware.

Thanks Senan! Mactracker did the trick! :)
I successfully updated the firmware and
installed OS 9.0.4 and Finder crashed every
single time I tried to dial into the
internet! So, here I am, back using OS 8.6
and the IE 4.5 seems to be the least stable
browser I have ever had the displeasure of
using. blech. Within the first 10 mins of
browsing, even trying to get as far as this
page, it crashed 6 times. No warnings,
nothing, the application was just ... gone.
Anyway, after reading on lowendmac dot com
and talking to some other Mac users, I can
upgrade this old box to 512 meg of RAM and
instal OS 10.4. Yes, I know it will be slow,
but at least it will have stable software and
up to date web brwosers like Firefox
available.

Now all I need is to find iChat and install
it so I can at least do a little something I
like with this computer until I get the new
RAM and OS installed.

Thanks for all the

It's important to use IE 517..the 4x versions of IE are not so stable on an imac..even on 8.6 you can use mozilla 1.3.1 (I'm using it on a 7200 right now, with 8.6) and IE 517..look for WamCom re the mozilla browser and MS's 'mactopia' has the IE update..you'll have to get Outlook express seperately from the same site..
Although 9.04 shouldn't crash that much, it's still not a very stable version..the best thing to do is update it to 9.2 or better yet, 9.2.2.It's free at apple's site-
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/
You'll have to hunt around on apple's site for the 9.2.2 update..it's in a different spot...
It will run fine on 333 MH..
Boot from the cd and first install 9.04,then mount all three disk images (9.1, 9.21, 9.2.2) install the 9.1 update, then the 9.2.1, then 9.2.2. without rebooting.
It will not require a reboot anyways.
Once you have finished, you can reboot.
Even if you upgrade 8.6 that way (using the 9.0.4 cd to update it) 9.2.2 should prove very stable.
I'd recommend a clean install tho..since you haven't had the mac for very long you probably have vew third-party apps installed so far..it would be the best route....

Thanks for the info.
I'll have to download all that at my friend's house with a cable modem as I have dialup at home (no broadband available within 40 minles my my house).

The machine had a clean 8.6 installed yesterday and has no 3rd party apps. It is a 100% clean installtion from the CD.

Should I upgrade the RAM to a pair of 256meg? I found some on Newegg dot com for $35 each, which doesn't look bad. A customer review said the memory worked fine in an iBook.

Here is the 9.2.2 update:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186

This looks like it will all work nicely.
Thanks again!

BTW, how do I mount the downloaded disc images?

Thanks for all the help.
After fighting corrupted update download for 4 hours, I finally got everything updated to 9.2.2, but now compressed file will not open because they say there is a confilct with the new OS and the version of Stuffit that is installed.
*shrug* I guess I'll fiddle with it an try to find an updated version of Stuffit or some similar program.

Again,
Thanks for your help! :)

Best,
Cliff
