OK, here's the scrape I've gotten myself into. IE 5.1 not only refuses to open, it freezes the iMac on startup. Can't use escape (not that it usually does much good anyway), have to use the restart.
I've run Norton, rebuilt the desktop, zapped the PRAM, dumped IE preferences, reinstalled IE 5.1, dwld a replacement IE and tried starting from that. The only diff is the replacement IE opens an alert window showing error 10 (line 1111 trap error) then freezes solid.
1. I need a list of extension, preference and maybe invisible files to be sure I got all the suckas'
2. I run Office 2001 so I have a lot of MS ext and other stuff all over the place and I'm trying to be careful to not destroy my Office Suite.
3. Could there be a non-MS file that works in conjunction with IE that may have been corrupted?
Any help appreciated.

-Roger

First thing I would ask is what is the last thing you did before the problem came up?

If it was the install of 5.1 then so the following.

If it was after installing something like a scanner then tell us as there are issues with some drivers, extensions and control panels that can cause this problem.

Since the computer crashes on start up, start the computer while holding down the shift key during the complete boot process till you see EXTENSIONS OFF on the screen.
Open The Harddrive folder.
Open the System folder.
Open the Extensions folder.
Arrange the icons in the folder by name (not required but makes it easier).
Delete everything that says microsoft.
Restart the computer normally.
Open Office and it will rebuild the microsoft libraries and such for office.
Open explorer and it will rebuild the libraries and such for explorer.

Hi Wayne, thanks for the reply. Not sure I made myself clear about the crashing - the Imac run fine but freezes and crashes when I attempt to open IE.
IE is a browser I use for in business for hours everyday. Nothing unusual going on at the time. I shut down one night and the next day the problem appeared. Makes me wonder if something went wrong with the Mac shut down process, but that kind of problem should show up in a Norton DiskDr run.
Did I mention, I reinstalled the old IE 4.? and it now misbehaves in the same way.
Your solution, dumping everything Microsoft sounds like the only thing left.
Sound like a clean OS install - I hate clean OS installs, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
Any thoughs about what may have led up to this?

My wife just reminded me, I changed the IE home page to her game site (Pogo.com) that day. Could that kind of change possibly destroy IE??

The fix I gave you is not a clean install. You will
lose nothing if you follow the instructions given.
As far as POGO there is some issue with Java that
I helped someone at work with.

Before you open explorer after using the fix given
above, do the following.
Click the Apple in your top left corner.
Click Control Panel
I cannot remember the exact control Panel but it is
one of them near the top of the list and I think it
says general preferences but I know I am wrong.
Anyway it is the setting and preferences for
explorer.
Change the home page for explorer from pogo to
Yahoo.com or something.
Now get on line and go to this link and download
the Java Runtime Update for 8.6.

http://www.versiontracker.com/php/
dlpage.php?id=377&kind=0

Now try to change back to the POGO page as
your home and see if it works.

I read my original post to you and realized I may
have given you a bad sentence. I said if the last
thing you did was install explorer 5.1 but what I
meant to say was explorer. period. The fix works
wih all versions of explorer in the Classic OS and
with Office 98 and 2001.
Sorry for the slip.
Oh and don't panic. Most all things that go wrong
with the Classic OS can be fixed with a little work.
10 gives you less trouble but when it does it
generally hurts.

Uh, why are you still using IE? It SUCKS as a browser.

iCab and Mozilla make a far better combination for browsing (Mozilla only for sites iCab can't handle) than IE ever has or ever will.

Chimera is great but it only runs on OS X. The OP has 8.6.
