Subject: iBook/video card question

Comment: I've got an iBookSE from 2000 with an ATI rage card (that only has 8meg vram) I'm very keenly interested into upgrading to a better ATI video card, is this possible with my laptop? if so/how so? If you can tell me anything, thanks a bunch! (for certain)

Reply: (edit)Even if it was possible the parts and labour would leave you with a ibook that costs more than a ti-book,seeing how most notebook have thier soundcard/ videocard built has part of the motherboard,or if not part of it,t's a custom fit which will be impossible to find off the shelf. But if you don't mind playing russian roulette with your ibook or money,I'm sure somebody out there on the web ,sells the main parts of an ibook, maybe one of them has the boards of a 700mhz,but they would cost way to much to concider as an upgrade!,just the bottom of the ibook casing is almost $200.00(if you can find one!)you also have to consider the ibook may look almost the same on the outside, but the inside is something completely differn't,the layout and sizes of parts can be totally differn't,power consumption can change +/-.hardware conflicts can arise and so on. So to sum it up!..........no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no..unless your current vid card dies on you, don't even bother trying to change it for something newer,it will just leave you with expensive parts that nobody in thier right mind would atemp to put in!

Reply: (edit) I have a similar question, but for my powerbook. It's at least a bit easier to gain access to.
In regards to the original poster... I agree that gaining access to the guts of an iBook is a nightmare. Check out this site that describes how to 'user install' an upgraded hard drive: http://caslis.com/mac/ibook/ibdrive.html

Reply: (edit)Most part's like hd's and cd drives/ floppies are easy to get to,but on notebooks all companies are strict on who could work on them(not very user freindly)if I were to upgrade my ibook myself,I would be flushing over 2 1/2yrs of apple care down the toilette!,however if that's not's really issue, you can change the main parts rather easily!,Just make sure you have a glass or something to put all the tiny screws in!...try and find 20+ tini tiny screws when they start rolling off the table!.
