I am going to be purchasing a used iBook Clamshell. I found a cheap IDE to USB converter at http://www.colorcase.com/idtousbcon.html but have a question here.

I have myself a LiteON DVD drive and a 18GB Hard drive. What kind of performance can I expect if both run at the same time? I am assuming the iBook only uses USB Version 1, and I am not sure what speed that delivers. Will movies on my DVD drive be decent speed?

Normally I am an avid Mac User but this field of the iBook is something new for me, since I want to ditch my current PC, sell it and buy the iBook and keep the extra 18GB of storage space and my DVD drive.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you're lucky enough to be getting one of the iBook SEs with FireWire, use that instead; USB is HORRIBLY slow for hard disks, although it's acceptable (barely) for optical drives.

Don't expect the DVD drive to play DVD movies too well, since Apple's DVD player software doesn't generally like external USB drives at all and doesn't generally like many FireWire drives either.
