I have not yet bought a iBook but am interested in the maximum resolution that can be used on an external display. The iBook's screen can only go up to 1024x768 but my SyncMaster can go up to 1280x1024 would I be able to use it at that res?

The reason why the ibook goes up to 1024 is because it is the native resolution for the TFT monitor. I would imagine that you are using a CRT?
Regarding resolution of external monitor, I would imagine that it would go to whatever resolution your external monitor supports.
The native resolution for a 15 TFT is 1024 for example, for a 17 TFT it is a little higher, but CRT's can generally reach a higher mode. A high resolution is not as important on a TFT - neither is the refresh rate.
