Comment:

I bought my new iBook G4 a few days ago, and it came installed with Tiger OSX plus the Mac version of MS Office 2004.

I downloaded a few programs from the internet, and when I click on the installer file, the Excel Mac program would automatically open the installer as an Excel spreadsheet. As a specific example, the downloaded installer program for the Mulberry email client software has this file name:

Mulberry_44_0.sig.bin

When I downloaded a Netscape email client software recently, it also opened as an Excel spreadsheet. All these websites couldn't have made the same mistake. So, the problem must lie with my iBook, or the Firefox Mac version browser, or something wrong on my side.

Would anyone like to offer some comments? Thanks.

Hi Senan:

Can you please elaborate on what to do. For example, I have download an installer file for videoconferencing, and the name is:

Messenger401.dmg.bin

The file icon even looks like the MS Excel. Can you pl explain, step by step what I should do with this to install the program? I'm a total stranger in the Apple Mac environment. Thanks.

Hi

Download and install this software Stuffit Expander http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html

It will expand ur binary files (.bin)

To check file association in os x click once on the file and then select get info from the file menu in the finder there u can change the association from excel to stuffit

Thanks for the tip. Installed stuffit and still trying to install those .bin downloads. Encountered another type of download app ending with .sit which is tricky to install.

Will just keep trying. Didn't expect Macs to be so different from MS. It's like learning to walk all over again. Luckily Amazon allows 30 days to return the iBook for refund.
