iBook battery problem

I have an old clamshell iBook (G3-300Mhz) and am having a problem running off of the battery. Even when fully charged, the battery monitor displays only around 40 minutes of time when activity is moderate (about 12 0'clock on the monitor). After around 5 minutes of use, however, the computer dies and will not restart until it is plugged in. Upon restart, the date has reset to 1904. I have tried 'battery reset' and 'battery update' and reseting the PRAM, but nothing has helped. The computer is only 18-months old so the battery should not be dead yet. Has anyone else seen this problem or know of a fix?

Try resetting your power manager. Instructions can be found in the Apple Knowledge Base by doing a search for "iBook Power Manager reset."
If that doesn't do it, there is a possibility (though a small one) that your battery is simply dead.

I've been having a similar problem for over a month with my clamshell (purchased in Jan. 2000). The orange glowing light never shows the battery is charged(by turning green) any more and on the icon the battery stays about 1/8 full. I tried the power manager fix and I'm about to buy a new battery. How do you reset PRAM? Is it worth a try?

If you've reset the Power Manager, you've already zapped your PRAM.

Any luck? I just inherited a 'clamshell / toilet-seat-cover' iBook from our IT department. It has been sitting in a drawer for about a year now. The battery refuses to take a charge. I guess I'll need a new battery.
